It's never been so easy to get the Kindergarteners to raise their hands.
They all wanted a picture to prove how messy they got in art class!
I have got to show their parents the pics, they won't believe it.
Hardly any got on their clothes! Success! |
Some classes are just fabulous, or you have them first thing in the morning and they are ready to work, or you have help, or everyone is in a great mood, so you can just GO THERE. By THERE I mean paint, glue, working in groups, the messy stuff that makes it real art. Other groups, not so much. So what do I do when I notice I need to refocus a classes behavior? Pull in the reigns, or the lock the messy stuff in my closet for a few weeks. I think this coming week I need to do just that! Markers, crayons, and pencils will be my best friends as I try to reorganize from a few weeks of pottery and painting projects.
I am going to share with you a Kindergarten
Here is my favorite version (the scrambled version) it was a little messy to say the least, but I had a great high school helper (a few absent kids brought the class count down so it was manageable.) Here's the inspiration http://www.artsonia.com/museum/gallery.asp?exhibit=401509 I pretty much STOLE this version it looked like so much fun!

Here's the inspiration from PICASSO.
We noticed that both hands were the right hand.
That helped students discover that the flowers were being given instead of held.
Interesting detail in such a simple picture. |
|
Every Kindergartener got one color and one brush. |
|
We talked a lot about how to ask someone to share their paint and trade.
We even rehearsed it! |
HERE'S THE OVER EASY VERSION! CRAYONS, CONSTRUCTION PAPER GLUE STICKS. This is a large bilingual class with no para and many needs.

WHY DOES BLOGGER INSIST ON PUTTING MY PICTURES SIDEWAYS? |
|
SORRY AGAIN, TURN YOUR COMPUTER MONITOR TO SEE THE ARTWORK AS IT WAS INTENDED! |
|
HELP! HOW DO YOU ROTATE A PICTURE THAT YOU ALREADY ROTATED IN iPHOTO!
WORK WITH ME BLOGGER. |
So there you have it! Art done 2 ways. Do you modify your projects for each class? Or is this off track? I can't find any way around it where I work!

cute! I do this project with 1st grade, but in a totally different way. I love your interpretation of it though. :)
I do this every year with my 1st grade classes and I never realized that it was two right hands! Duh! I liked this "art two ways" and yes, I frequently have to do that depending on what supplies I have in different buildings or the behavioral constraints of the class. I do this around Mother's day and we use the painting as the front of a Mother's Day card.
Yep, I do scrambled and sunny side up too! When all the special needs are in one class or all the behavior is in another sometimes you do what you have to do to have them be successful! How's baby Stella? I haven't seen any updated photos lately. :)
I love the scrambled and over easy terms! I sometimes change lessons for certain classes. Sometimes because scheduling means they have to complete it faster, sometimes because of behaviors. On my Messy Mondrian project (http://artteacheradventures.blogspot.com/2012/01/messy-mondrians.html) we had 2 versions partly because of scheduling, and for one class because they would not settle down and focus for the demo so their behavior didn't allow enough time to do the scrambled version.
Oh, and the picture thing... The only idea I have is that if I rotate a picture just in the view mode in iPhoto, it doesn't always stay rotated. But if I rotate it in the edit mode, it seems to work. I've noticed the same thing with renaming files. I don't know if you are "viewing" or "editing" when you rotate but that might be something to check on.
Love the terms! Yes the materials for lessons definitely depend on each class's ability to handle them. I love reading your blog! Today was one of those hard days...lots of challenging kiddos. It feels good to sit down and read someone else having the same challenges. I too am ready to lock up some of those messy (but fun) supplies. Just got done with a month long recycle art unit with 2-5 grade. Garbage and recyclables galore!
