Happy Halloween

So, I just bought my first bags of Halloween candy for tomorrow and it was 5 minutes before I was eating a Snickers! I'm wondering if everyone will have a sugar slump on Monday or be hyped up from all the candy. Only one way to find out. . . until then we can place bets.

To spread the Halloween Spirit. . . here are some pumpkin still lives my First Graders painted. They used primary colors to mix secondary colors. Yes, they are all made by first graders. I know some look like I did them, but I swear I never laid a finger or paint brush on their paper (not my style.) These kids are that amazing!

P.S. I take no credit for the amazingness of these kids. Their classroom teacher is one of the best. Doesn't it make the world of difference to work with great classroom teachers?

These are great and yes the classroom teacher makes alot of difference! i think that Art Teachers Hate Glitter had a funny post about that, you can almost predict which classes are going to be great by the teacher they have. Happy Halloween to you! I am going to try the all ears box myself too, I am tired of asking the ultimate higher order Blooms taxonomy question - hands are raised, yes they are getting it .... only to get a " a ummm ah um Joey joey stuck his tongue at me..."

These are really beautiful! I love how each pumpkin is a different shade of orange! I'm alway amazed at how many different perspectives the kids showcase even when the subject is the same!
You're SO right about the classroom teacher's influence... I just had a teacher come into my room to talk to her kids... She talked about how Mrs. Perdue is an art specialist and how they are lucky to work with Mrs. Perdue, because I can only draw stick figures...So make sure to soak up everything she teaches you.
I love that she actually cares about what they do and how they act in my room- SO rare!

What a great teacher! It matters when they care about art. I used to have a teacher that would come a few minutes early and ask what the kids were making and she was REALLY excited about their art work. She also loved to sing and would spend a couple of minutes in music. It was COOL because she had such a great energy and the kids adopted it.

First grade art is my favorite!! The classroom teacher make a huge difference in the class dynamic. Her input stimulates creativity and an openness to try new things. If the teacher isn't supportive, the class definitely reflects that.

They are amazing! The colours are absolutely gorgeous together. Do you mind if I ask if the children completed this over 1 session or two? We painted fruit recently and i wish I had thought to suggest the black outline. It is stunning.

My class bounced from one activity to another today - literally. And we don't really celebrate Halloween here.

It took two sessions. . . actually three. The first we read a book called pumpkins about the life cycle of a pumpkin from seed, to farmer, to it's final destiny as a jackolantarn, pie or rotting on the vine. The illustrations were all photographs. Then we sketched a real pumpkin and colored it. We added details we saw in the book like vines and flowers. I also introduced the paint procedure this day. Next day (I have 1 hour classes) we sketched the pumpkin on painting paper and painted. The final day we outlined with black paint, we had a lot of time left so they got to "free paint" using black paint on white paper which looked really cool too. I am really big on procedures especially the first time we do a big painting or clay project so I take it really slow. I like the kids to learn how to clean up and pass out supplies too. The SHORT answer is. . . I think it can be done in 2 weeks:) if they know how to paint.

Missed this post in earlier readings.. love the pumpkins! You are so right about the classroom teachers. Some will take the time to ask the kids what they've done, want to see it, to marvel over it,and others practically drag them out the door..
