Easy Project You Can Do Tomorrow: Line Fish

I found an old art book in my room with a picture of this. . .

Example from old art text book.

I had to try it with my "extra" 1/2 hour classes. We get a few classes for an extra 1/2 hour. I hate for those classes to get too far ahead of the others. It's also such a short amount of time (usually class is 1 hour) so I like projects that have little mess so they have a lot of work time.

Basically all you need is paper, a black marker and crayons (optional)

Here is my example. I will photograph the student work which I saved for a bulletin board next year.

First draw a curved loopdy loop line.
That's the technical term for it!

My example.

Aren't these fish happy.
A second grader made them.
More to come in the beginning of next school year!
Overall, the kids got creative with their fish, added treasure boxes, seaweed, pirate ships, etc. and it was a very relaxing, zentangle (excuse the reference) kind of project. Hope this little project can come in handy for you one day when you need a creative lesson but only have marker, paper and a half hour!

This would be good for a quick lesson for a substitute to do, too!

Yes this would work really well for a sub!

I will definitely do this in some of my classes. All of my classes are 1/2 hour, but I do see them every other day. I wish it was for 45-50 min. though.
Thanks for sharing,
Peace-

Boy I'm having weird problems posting comments today. Let's try again...

I think I said (in the comment that just disappeared) that these look very "Seuss-ical". Cute, easy, and fun - I'd like to add some watercolors or markers to them. My art classes are 40 minutes so I could still do it in one session.

I first thought "great sub plan" too, but I learned after being out this spring, with a great, but non-art sub, that sometimes the non-art certified sub doesn't know how to add that hard-to-define element of encouragement of creative thinking, that makes the kids come up with really creative and original solutions. So I think I'll keep this easy idea for myself! Thanks :-)

I like the fishy lesson. I agree it could be a great sub lesson!

I have been planning a lesson using the book "only one you" about a little fish and the great advice he gets from his parents. I was planning on buy 300 rocks and painting them but this is an awesome idea that I might just snitch. Thanks... Love the blog and when things just click!

Since you suggested that this might work well for a sub, I posted a link to this over on my blog for art subs. http://artsublessons.blogspot.com/2013/01/loopy-line-fish.html

Trying this with a Year 1 class and loving results so far, with drawing. How to finish? Water wash over black lines only?
