This is for MJ who couldn't wait to see the lifecycle part of the project (see how to make the monarch prints in previous post.) I can't wait to show you . . . so here it is. First graders study the life cycle of the butterfly every year in our school (just like at yours Phyl.)

Oh Art Project Girl....I took your advice made these monoprint butterflies today in my 1-2 art class. Kids loved them and they came out great. Thanks for the share:}
I've done the colorful butterflies but the monarch's are so much more relevant and EASY with the limited color palette! Glad teacher and students enjoyed!!!
Yes we did the monarchs! Reviewed symmetry, introduced analogous colors, talked about print making, and finished our paintings all in one session.
Figured out after the second class that I didn't need water cups. Just had the kids start with yellow, move to orange, and gave a small brush for black to finish up.

Such a timely post, great simple relevant end of year one period lesson! Thanks, I am curious about the extension part, our first grades have the butterflies in their classroom, did you have them draw from observation or how did you do the illustrations?
I wish they drew from observation! With all the snow days I think many teachers opted out of the annual butterfly hatching. I have some pictures from a science magazine. The kids were also familiar with the hungry caterpillar.
Barbara I agree no brush washing... That's one of the beautiful things about this project:)
